Wha’ daur meddle wi’ me?


This has nothing to do with my research – though it came about whilst searching through prison calendars for evidence that women were imprisoned for having illegitimate children.

As I was scanning page after page of printed lists, I chanced on an entry relating to a burglary which took place in my village in 1837.  A thrill of recognition struck me when I realized that the person who had been burgled lived at that time in the house which I now own.

Everyone else has a neighbourhood watch sticker.  I am certain that my little poster in the window sends a much sterner message to a would be miscreant!

The title is the Scots form of the motto of Scotland nemo me impune lacessit – it draws a much clearer picture.
